How much TV is too much TV?

As the title states, todays post is about television.

During the day before Baby E was here the TV wouldn't be on, instead I would be on my phone or laptop or I had music playing from my laptop. We use to watch it at night time though. I just wasn't interested in it during the day but that has changed since Baby E has made his appearance...

I would say Baby E was introduced to the TV from an early age 3-4 months I think, when I say introduced I mean I popped on some Disney Junior on in the background for background noise - usually Baby E would be cuddled in my arms or snoozing anyway so didn't see much of it, but it was there. I would say about 6 months plus was when he really started to noticed the TV more - I mean he noticed it before and the program maybe held onto his attention for a matter of seconds - he would be sitting on the floor and suddenly a bright picture of movement would catch his attention and he would be ever so happy just watching an advert or a program that was on at the time. He soon began to 'watch' it every so often.

Like I said the TV was really only on for background noise, we would play throughout the day and if something did happen to catch his eye - that was okay.

Fast forward to 10 months and we have a Mickey Mouse loving little boy, but not forgetting Doc McStuffins and Princess Sofia too!
I wouldn't say he watches much TV. It is still on everyday, we still play everyday but sometimes if he wants to cuddle while watching Curious George then I'm more than happy to join him.
If a theme tune comes on that he recognises he gets so excited and the smile on his face is huge.
He has started to dance to music so when this happens his little legs are going too. He also points and waves at the people on the TV.

I would still say Baby E doesn't understand what is happening or what they are saying, I think he like the bright colours to be honest with you.

Saying that I don't want him sitting in front of the TV for hours on end, I want him to be outside enjoying the great outdoors like what I did when I was a child - I still watched TV!

I now have to admit that I do watch more TV now - still for background noise - when Baby E is snoozing.  I never thought I would be one to sit and series record Jeremy Kyle but here I am watching it on repeat...

What I want to know is how much TV is too much TV?  How much TV does your little ones get to watch in the day?

  1. I often battled with the 'too much TV' debate. I would say when all 3 of mine were babies, they prob watched TV everyday but on and off for a couple of hours?? I never calculated it to be honest. But to be honest, they are all happy kids now and doing really well at school so I don't think that it did them any harm! #mummymonday

  2. At the moment I'm Team Screen but I select what he watches on youtube and can control how long he watches. As he gets older I hope that he can make the choice himself x

  3. I watch some daytime TV when I'm at home but Lizzy isn't really interested, and she only recently started showing interest in things like Mr Tumble, even cartoons she doesn't like much yet, even though I regularly turn cbeebees on to see if she'll watch! She much prefers nursery rhymes on YouTube and this a whole other debate isn't it -how much is too much iphone/iPad?! She has these for less than an hour each day in separate sessions and I think this is fine. Everything in moderation I think! #mummymonday

  4. Baby E is 8 months and does take an interest in the TV. He recognises characters, giggles in all the right places and whips his head around to watch the weather on a regular basis! He is never just sat in front of it for hours on end but will watch cartoons with myself and Mr W and we talk to him about what he is seeing and clap and sing along to make it more interactive. A health visitor recently told us there is a new initiative being pushed to allow no screen time at all to under 2's. Like most things though I think individual parents need to decide and find the right balance for their own children. Plus how can I deny Baby E of Ra Ra the Noisy Lion when he laughs uncontrollably at him in the morning!

Well im sure if they told me that at this stage i would ask them if they want to take away Micky Mouse from a happy little baby! haha! Thanks for your input and comment! xx

  5. we watch very little TV to be honest. Daniel tends to watch 10 minute clips via youtube and Emma doesn't really notice the TV at all. I would personally get rid of my TV tomorrow but I can also see the benefit of it. I guess for me it isn't something that really features for me so it doesn't occur to me to turn the TV on in the day x

  6. Little Miss H is about to turn two and she loves TV. She loves In the Night Garden, Sarah and Duck and the Octonauts. But we also do so many other activities together during the day. and we tend to only put the TV on if I need to distract her or if we are having a snuggle. I think you know when the amount your baby watches is too much. It sounds like you have a good balance. Thanks for linking up to #SundaysStars. Hugs Mrs H xxxx
