Baking With A One Year Old!

Something we have recently started doing is baking.

I am not a baker in the slightest, I haven't baked since school I would say!  I am the worst at measuring out ingredients and I usually get more of that ingredient over the counter rather than in the bowl. Oh and if I even got as far as putting them in the oven at the correct temperature they would come out burnt to a crisp with no one sampling my hard work!

As it was the holidays (yes, every day is a 'holiday' as I do not 'work' - I feel I need to put the speech quotes as some people get these mixed up!) and Granny was off  we decided it would be a good idea to bake some cupcakes!
We included Elliott in every single step - if they turned out bad who would mind, they were made by a 1 year old after all! He loved it, sifting the flour was lots of fun when it was up the walls... but we eventually made the cupcake batter. Once they were in the oven we made a start on the icing. This was by far Elliott's favourite bit! He loved stirring the water into the icing sugar and it was soon in his hair and all over us! We tried to keep the icing spoon away from his mouth as we didn't want him bouncing off the walls but we soon gave up as he was having none of it!

Once the cakes were out the oven and cooled we iced them - although not before Elliott decided each cupcake required an Elliott sized finger poked into them!

They were the best tasting cupcakes ever and he proudly showed off his work to Grandad, who ate two in a row!

I think I will start baking more regularly with Elliott, he had a blast and could eat his hard work afterwards which made a good incentive for him! After all we found out that having fun is the best ingredient to add!

  4. Baking, what a brilliant idea! My little boy is just 3 weeks shy of being 1 years old and he's increasingly interested in anything messy. I hear that 'messy play' is something that they do at the play centre anyway, so I might just introduce him to a spot of 'messy baking'

    Thanks for the inspiration!

    Lovely post.

  12. Oh how fun! My little is almost 1 and I can't quite see us baking yet, mainly cause he just sticks his hands in stuff but doesn't really get it yet. But I'm looking forward to being able to do that and have him enjoy mixing bowls and licking cookie dough :)
